The Brewers have reached a minor league deal with the right-hander Brad Boxberger, Reports ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel (via Twitter). Boxberger will receive an invitation to the Major League spring training camp.
After signing a juvenile contract with the Marlins last winter, Boxberger posted a 3.00 ERA in 18 innings with Miami, plus 3 1/3 scoreless frames during the team’s playoffs. It was a nice rebounding performance for Boxberger in terms of pure results after struggling in 2019 with the Royals, although there wasn’t much of an analytical difference between the two seasons.
Boxberger’s 22.8K% and 10.1BB% were both below average and there weren’t many bright spots in his Statcast numbers except for a rapid turnover rate in the 90th percentile. . For added benefits, Boxberger has posted a career best 51% ground rate, and his fastball averaged 92.5 mph for its highest speed since 2015.
It was during that 2015 season that Boxberger achieved All-Star status for a 41-save season with the Rays, but he then struggled with injuries and has become something of a companion since Tampa’s. traded to the Diamondbacks in November 2017. As of Opening Day 2018, Boxberger is now a member of six different organizations, including Milwaukee. The right-hander will be competing for a job at a Bubble Pen Brewers who have a lot of talent but relatively little MLB experience, so Boxberger could add a veteran element to the mix.
