Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes tied the major league record Wednesday night with 10 consecutive strikeouts from his Cubs’ opponents. He didn’t strike anyone in the first inning, but then put out the side at bat in the second, third and fourth innings before taking out Frank Schwindel at bat in the fifth to tie the record. Then Matt Duffy followed with a single line drive to break it.

The Brewers would win with a laugh, 10-0.

Burnes equalizes Tom Seaver (April 22, 1970) and Aaron Nola (June 25), as the only pitchers to ever strike out 10 straight batters in the same game.

Burnes took a seven-point lead even before taking the mound, with the Brewers’ offense hitting Cubs starter Jake Arrieta. Burnes took the runner up and ran with it. He allowed a single to start the game, but came out of the inning after causing a double play. As noted, the next 10 batters he faced were all struck out. After Duffy’s single, Burnes recorded his 11th strikeout.

Burnes would end up dominating incredibly effectively. He pulled off a career-high 15 in his eight innings of work. He didn’t kid anyone and only needed 99 shots. He allowed just four hits in eight scoreless innings. On his 99 throws, he had 30 swings and misses as well as 20 called strikes.

The 15 strikeouts were the second-highest total in Brewers history behind Ben Sheets, who struck out 18 on May 16, 2004.

Burnes relied heavily on his stellar cutter, but also beautifully blended in his curve and shift to make the Cubs’ hitters look silly. Here are the visuals of the sequence:

This is Burnes’ sixth start with double-digit strikeouts this season and the 10th time in his career.

Behind three aces – Burnes and fellow All-Stars Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff – the Brewers have an eight-game lead in NL Central.
