The score of the box
Corbin Burnes needed seventeen shots to settle in for his first playoff start. At this point, he was unusually scoring two batters, making a wild pitch, taking a batter at bat and coming out of the inning unscathed.
Burnes, who has been solid all year on the path to an ERA title and a winning season, often without much support and less defensive support than expected by the team behind him, needed a pass decisive. He would get it in the form of a timely double play. Ozzie Albies hit a Groundball chopper down to the first baseline. Rowdy Tellez lined it up, scored the sack, then threw a throw towards Omar Narváez, who chose the low throw just in time to touch Jorge Soler, who was running from third at home.
The double play gave Burnes and American Family Field plenty of energy, but not necessarily control. He delivered a wild pitch that saw Freddie Freeman move up to third before taking Austin Riley out on strikes to end the set.
Burnes was extinguished after that, striking out six hitters, allowing two hits, walking another hitter and stopping Atlanta. The rest of the competition was the worst we expected with a Burnes / Morton duel.
The difference was a home run from Rowdy Tellez at the end of the seventh inning. Avisaíl García was the first after an RAP. In the count, Tellez hammered a 95.8 Charlie Morton fastball well over the fence in the center-right.
Playing a bullpen role on the series, Adrian Houser provided two innings of solid relief, on top of the solo home run he gave Pearl Joc Peterson after the season. He caused a lot of strikeouts and struck out a batter. Peterson’s home run was the only hit he allowed.
That wouldn’t be enough for Atlanta, who led 2-1 when Josh Hader took the ball in the ninth. Hader kicked off the set with a zero and came out of the game with a save despite a little traffic on the basespaths. He cleared a start walk and had runners around the corners, including the first lead race, when old friend Orlando Arcia came to bat. Arcia landed on an 82 MPH slider to end the game and give the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the series.
