NORTH PORT, Fla – Brian Laundrie stole Gabby Petito’s credit card and used it to return home, where he returned in early September, “then ran away from the police,” the spokesperson said from Petito’s family during an interview on Tuesday.
Petito’s family members and family lawyer and spokesperson Richard Stafford sat down for a 30-minute interview with Dr Phil McGraw on his eponymous show. This was the parents’ first interview together since authorities announced on September 21 that Petito, 22, had died from an homicide. The cause of his death has not yet been announced.
Police had previously named Petito’s fiancé, Brian Laundrie, as a person of interest in connection with what was then his disappearance. On September 23, the FBI issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie, charging him with bank card fraud.

Authorities alleged at the time that he used an unidentified person’s Capital One card and personal identification number to charge or withdraw more than $ 1,000 between August 30 and September 1, a period during which which Petito was still missing. Neither investigators nor a spokesperson for Petito’s family confirmed whether the card belonged to Petito.

But speaking of what he considered to be Laundrie’s “state of mind” as described by Laundrie’s actions, Stafford described how Laundrie “stole his credit card.”
“He used his credit card to get home, then ran away from the police,” Stafford continued. “It’s going to show a lot what he was thinking at the time.”
Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino declined to comment.

Stafford later added: “I don’t know what story he’s going to try to tell, but it won’t make sense when you put it together with his actions from this point on – that he’s running, that he’s hiding. , that he’s trying to fool everyone around him. “
The couple set out on a cross-country trip in mid-June in a converted white Ford Transit pickup truck with the intention of visiting national parks along the way. They had started dating years earlier after meeting at their local high school in Long Island, New York, and had moved to North Port, Florida to live with Laundrie’s parents.
Laundrie, who is now a fugitive, returned to the North Port house in the couple’s van without Petito. He has not been seen since September 14 and was still at large on Tuesday afternoon.

Petito was not reported missing until September 11, when his mother notified police in Suffolk County, New York. Authorities then seized the van from the laundries’ home.
His body was found near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on September 19. Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue discovered in his initial determination that Petito had been the victim of a homicide, the FBI field office in Denver reported on September 21.
