The hit show “Bridgerton” is officially the most-watched Netflix original series in the company’s history.
The show, based on a book of the same name by Julia Quinn, even exceeded the streaming service’s optimistic projections in its first season by gaining 82 million views, Deadline reported Wednesday.
Bridgerton depicts upper-class life in Regency England, giving a subversive take on the period with a color-blind cast and a storyline that focuses heavily on the lives of women.
The series was released on December 25 on Netflix and has been described by GQ Magazine as a combination of “Gossip Girl” and “Downton Abbey”.
“I think the show really offers an incredible escape for audiences at a time when this is exactly what they need,” said director Chris Van Dusen.
“Bridgerton” is Regency’s lavish, vibrant and sizzling love story; it is about romance, love and joy; I think all of these things are really universal themes that people respond to.
Netflix tweeted a message of appreciation to fans of the show on Wednesday, thanking them for making “Bridgerton” a success.
Regé-Jean Page, who plays The Duke of Hastings, also posted a photo with the entire cast and crew thanking fans for their love and support.
Last week, Netflix announced that Bridgerton will be returning for a second season and will focus on Bridgerton’s eldest child, Anthony, played by Jonathan Bailey.
It’s unclear how many of the show’s Season 1 cast will return.
