‘Bridgerton’ renewed for season 2 at Netflix, will focus on book 2

Prepare your best porcelain! Bridgerton returns for season 2, Netflix announced Thursday.

The streamer confirmed the long-awaited renewal with a “letter” from the infamous Lady Whistledown gossip mediator, who notes that the production of season 2 of the lush period drama – created by Chris Van Dusen and adapted of Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels – will be starting this spring. The letter also teases that “Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season,” a hint that season 2 will follow Book 2 of Quinn’s series, The viscount who loved me, which focuses on the romantic exploits of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey).

The racy, racial drama of the Regency era caught the eyes of 63 million homes in the first four weeks, making it Netflix’s fifth-largest original series behind The witcher Season 1, Lupine Season 1 Part 1, Money heist Part 4 and Tiger King. The inaugural series of the Shondaland / Netflix deal from executive producer Shonda Rhimes, Bridgerton launched on Christmas Day and quickly broke into the streaming service’s Top 10.

Just like Quinn’s books do, Bridgerton follows eight attractive, well-heeled siblings and their loving widowed mother, Viscountess Violet (Ruth Gemmell), as they build on each other and seek romance and a life of their own. The Bridgertons’ plans – good, bad or ugly – are obsessively watched and reported by Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), the writer hidden behind London’s voraciously consumed gossip rag. Viewers learned who she really was by the end of the Season 1 eight-episode series, but the nobles in this fictional version of 19th-century London are no wiser.

Season 1 was based on Book 1, The duke and me, and followed the initially feigned and ultimately inflamed courtship, love story, and marriage between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor, Younger) and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset (Rege-Jean Page).
