UPDATE: Production of ‘Bridgerton’ season 2 has come to a halt again after its second case of COVID-19 in a week, Variety confirmed.
Production has been indefinitely suspended on the popular Netflix show. Although the streamer declined to say if the person who contracted COVID-19 was a cast or team member, the person is now in isolation.
The shutdown comes as “Bridgerton” had just resumed production on Friday after a team member tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week. The Delta variant of COVID-19 has become of growing concern in recent weeks as it has sparked a surge of cases internationally. Deadline was the first to break news of the second shutdown.
Variety understands that filming was immediately halted to allow for a series of isolated tests of everyone involved in the series. All COVID-19 health and safety protocols were followed and those affected were isolated.
Production for Season 2 began in May in various locations across London. Breakout star Phoebe Dynevor returns for the series, which is based on the novels by Julia Quinn, but Regé-Jean Page will not be part of the series.
The hiatus and resumption of production comes as the UK prepares to fully reopen on July 19, the so-called Freedom Day. The country now has the highest daily rate of new cases in the world with 48,553 cases recorded on July 15, a seven-day average of 36,886, according to the latest figures released by the British government. The past seven days have seen a total of 261,832 new cases, an increase of 32.6%.
Daily deaths are now 63, with 257 people dying from the virus last week, an increase of 47.7%. Daily hospitalization rates are now 563, with 3,933 admitted in the past seven days, an increase of 46.8%.
More than 1.2 million people are tested daily: 87.5% of the population received their first dose of vaccination while 67.1% received both vaccines.
It remains to be seen whether Freedom Day will lead to a spike in new cases.
Earlier this week, the first season of “Bridgerton” garnered 12 Primetime Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series and Lead Actor for Male Main Page. It was the streamer’s most popular show with 82 million viewers.
It is produced by Shondaland.
