WILDWOOD, NJ (AP) – The bridge of a multilevel house collapsed on Saturday night at Jersey Shore during a weekend of event, trapping people and injuring people. at least 22 people, including children, announced officials. No deaths have been reported.
The collapse occurred around 18 hours. Saturday at Wildwood at the annual firefighters convention in New Jersey.
It was not known how many people were on or under the bridges at the time, nor how many of them were firefighters, but the authorities indicated that the people who were trapped were quickly kidnapped.
The annual convention attracts thousands of current and former firefighters to the resort. Firefighters were probably injured or trapped.
The Cape May Regional Health System said 21 people were taken there, including at least three children. Eleven patients had been released at 10 pm, including all admitted children, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Staeger.
AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City said that at least one additional person had been taken there.
The conditions of the remaining hospitalized patients were not known.
Photos and videos on social networks showed firefighters trying to lift a piece of decking. The images showed multiple decking levels torn from the building and reduced to beams and splintered wood.
The bridges appeared to have been attached to a three-storey building surmounted by an overhang on the fourth floor. The second and third levels seemed to have stagnated on a bridge on the first floor. The overhang seemed intact.
Neighboring resident Joann Devito saw the collapse of a bridge in the street.
"I was sitting on the bridge up there and I heard that noise, so I turned to look and saw everything give way," she said. "I saw two women running and screaming – it was horrible."
Wildwood Fire Chief Daniel Speigel said the authorities would not make a statement Saturday amid attempts at cleanup and investigation. More information is likely on Sunday, he said.
