Jordan Spieth’s offer for a second burgundy jug is well underway.

Spieth, who won the Open in 2017 at Royal Birkdale, landed an early bogey on the third hole Thursday at Royal St. George’s and had four straight birdies on his first nine before shooting an under-65 open.

Spieth started the birdie race by piercing a 25-foot foot from the front edge of the green at the fifth par-4.

He then hit a beauty off the tee at the sixth for 175 yards, par 3, before draining a 10-footer.

The third birdie came in at the seventh par 5 before Spieth entered the fourth at the eighth par 4 to go to 3 under, one stroke less than the front at the time.

After a birdie on the 15th par-4, he capped his day with six birdies and momentarily took a one-stroke lead, draining another 25 feet, this time at the 16th par-3.

Spieth has three top-10s and hasn’t missed a cut in seven Open appearances. In 2017, Spieth also opened in 5 Under 65 at Birkdale before winning in end-to-end mode.
