The final major of the 2021 golf season is launched and the Open Championship is being played for the first time in two years. Summer beauty surrounds Sandwich, England as the 149th Open returns to Royal St. George’s for the first time in a decade.

While there have been a few withdrawals due to COVID-19 protocols, this year’s affair unfolded with a busy course featuring many of the world’s best golfers on an absolutely scenic course. Shane Lowry comes in as the longtime defending champion, but he’s not among the top contenders this year.

2021 US Open champion Jon Rahm came in as a 7-1 favorite, according to William Hill Sportsbook, as he seeks to become the fifth golfer in history to win back-to-back Opens. Dustin Johnson is looking for a measure of revenge after failing here in 2011, while Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and a number of others aim to get back on track by capturing the last major of the year.

Spieth and Louis Oosthuizen, who have had excellent performances in major tournaments this year, are both leading until the first round, although Johnson and Brooks Koepka (among others) are not far behind with all golfers. now on the course for their first 18 holes.
