Britney Spears loses offer to remove father from guardianship, refuses to perform

LOS ANGELES – Pop star Britney Spears’ attempt to remove her father, James Spears, from guardianship of his estate suffered a temporary setback with a Los Angeles court dismissing the claim.

James Spears has been her co-curator since 2008, when the singer suffered a very public outage. He became the sole conservative in 2019 after lawyer Andrew Wallet resigned from his co-tutelage.

In a hearing Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny refused to suspend James Spears from his trusteeship, although she did not rule out future motions for his impeachment or suspension.

“My client informed me that she was afraid of her father,” Britney Spears’ attorney Samuel D. Ingham III told the judge. “She won’t perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”

At the same time, the financial company Bessemer Trust was appointed co-custodian.

James Spears ‘attorney Vivian Thoreen argued that under her client’s tutelage Britney Spears’ net worth came out of debt to $ 60 million.

The move takes place amid the ongoing #FreeBritney campaign, which claims the singer is being controlled by James against his will. The most recent development, last month, allows Britney to expand its legal team.

He took on the role in the wake of Britney’s very public mental collapse in 2007. Most recently, interim curator Jodi Montgomery stepped in to help Spears. James has since criticized the #FreeBritney movement, likening its supporters to conspiracy theorists.

The singer reportedly asked to be removed from his post earlier this year, but his curator was later extended until February 2021.

In September, the singer’s father also withdrew his attempt to rehire real estate manager Andrew Wallet, who Spears said was “particularly unsuitable” when he first came to her house.

Wallet worked from 2008 to 2019 as a co-curator, but Britney said she had “tough budget choices going forward” and couldn’t afford her services.

Wallet then claimed that the star could be under his tutelage for the rest of her life.
