Britney Spears ‘new lawyer said Monday he was moving “aggressively and swiftly” to remove Spears’ father, Jamie, from guardianship.
“First of all, once again, I want to thank Britney Spears for her courage and strength,” said Mathew S. Rosengart outside the court. “I would like to thank Justice Penny for her courtesy in welcoming my firm and myself to this matter. And I also want to thank Britney Spears fans and supporters, the outrage and support for the company, myself and Britney has truly been overwhelming, from coast to coast and around the world.
He concluded his brief remarks by saying, “Well, the last thing I am going to say about this case, as I said in court last week and outside my company and I have acted to aggressively and expeditiously to file a motion to remove Jamie Spears. unless he resigns first.
Last Wednesday, Spears requested that Rosengart be his lawyer following the resignation of his court-appointed lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III. Rosengart is a prominent Hollywood lawyer and former federal prosecutor. He previously represented Ben Affleck, Steven Spielberg and Sean Penn.
During the hearing, Spears cried as he reiterated his demand for his father Jamie Spears to step down as co-curator.
Britney Spears’ guardianship dates back to 2008, when she had her very public mental health issues. After losing custody of her two children to her former husband Kevin Federline, and then refusing to hand over her boys after a visit, Spears was hospitalized and placed on psychiatric hold 5150, beginning wardship under her father’s wardship, Jamie Spears.
The pop star is in fact under two guardianship: a guardianship over his estate, which focuses on financial matters, and a guardianship over himself, which gives the curator control over his medical and personal decisions.
Last month, Britney Spears spoke publicly about guardianship for the first time at a hearing in Los Angeles Estates Court. Since his speech at the June 23 hearing, there have been a series of petitions from those involved in the guardianship.
“I just want my life back,” Spears said at the hearing. “And it’s been 13 years. And that’s enough. It’s been a long time since I owned my money. And it is my wish and my dream that it all ends up untested.
