Britney Spears, meet Betty Friedan.

The theater's owner, James L. Nederlander, announced Tuesday that he was producing a new musical featuring Ms. Spears' catalog of songs, one of the best-selling pop artists of all time, which explores an alternative arc for some princesses of classic fairy tales.

The show, a musical called "Once Upon a More Time", is expected to have a production in the fall in Chicago, then seek to be transferred to Broadway.

Unlike many jukebox musicals, this show will not focus on Mrs. Spears' life (which was not a fairy tale), but will instead offer a revisionist look at some legendary characters. In this show, a bi-monthly reading club consisting of Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty works through a collection of Grimmms fairy tales – the only book in their possession. But when women want new readings, a fairy godmother brings them Ms. Friedan's feminist classic, "The Feminine Mystique," and their lives are changed unexpectedly.

"Cinderella is experiencing an existential crisis and she has a band of famous princesses and her mother-in-law is the main antagonist. There is also Prince Charming and a dwarf whom we have never met – the eighth dwarf – and a narrator who is unhappy system is being dismantled before his eyes, "said the editor, Jon Hartmere, who wrote the screenplay for "The Upside" and was one of the authors of "Bare", a musical about gay Christian teens.
