Britney Spears will not take a battery charge in a dispute with a housekeeper

Britney Spears will not face charges after her housekeeper accused the pop star of a physical altercation that involved slapping her hand on a phone, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said on Wednesday.

Spears has been accused of arguing with her housekeeper on August 16 over the veterinary care of the singer’s dog. The housekeeper said it became physical and her phone was damaged, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department was called to the pop star’s home.

MPs opened an investigation into a battery of crimes, and the case was then referred to prosecutors for review.

The case was reviewed by Ventura County District Attorney’s Misdemeanor Unit Supervisor Blake Heller, the office said in a statement. On Wednesday, prosecutors refused to press charges “on the basis of insufficient evidence that a crime had been committed and the lack of injury to the housekeeper or significant damage to the phone.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, the housekeeper told MPs that the phone’s screen protector was damaged.

After reports of the incident became public, Spears’ attorney Mathew Rosengart described the incident in a statement to BuzzFeed News as “sensational, exaggerated tabloid fodder.”

“If it involved Jane Doe rather than Britney Spears, it wouldn’t have been prosecuted or covered at all,” he told BuzzFeed News on Wednesday. “We are happy that the prosecutor’s office has done the right thing. Unfortunately, it is evident that some have learned nothing from the past, and we sincerely hope that the media and others will be more respectful of Ms Spears at the future.”

Reports of the altercation came after Spears was caught in the middle of a legal battle to end a 13-year guardianship and regain control of her life.
