Brittany Murphy’s tragic death is examined in the trailer for What Happened, Brittany Murphy?

Brittany Murphy’s stellar career and tragic death will be back in the spotlight after HBO Max released the first trailer for their upcoming documentary What Happened, Brittany Murphy? Thursday.

The actress, who died in 2009 aged 32, is shown in vintage footage that covers her rise in films like Clueless and 8 Mile to her shocking weight loss and isolation with husband Simon Monjack in his later years.

Monjack, who died just six months after Murphy in equally unusual circumstances, is portrayed in a grim light in the trailer, with the interview subjects suggesting he threw a web of lies and “made sure that no one can reach “Murphy.

From the start, the trailer focuses on Murphy’s tragic death, with footage from the media coverage of her passing as well as a photo of her appearing affectionate with Monjack.

“Simon took her,” says a woman featured in the trailer. “He made sure no one could reach him.”

Then the trailer moves on to more positive coverage dating back to his teenage years.

She was seen smiling from ear to ear and laughing as she introduced herself in a video made while still in college.

“There was a kind of sweet, childish, lost quality that she had that breaks your heart,” one person mused grimly, unlike the optimistic images.

But the trailer features a conflict as Murphy matured into older roles, where his appearance was suddenly scrutinized.

“Brittany Murphy was super cute, but in Hollywood you have to be Gwyneth Paltrow,” one person said.

Red carpet footage then shows Murphy leaner than before and with her hair dyed blonde.

“She was not a typical pretty girl,” adds another interview subject. And so many young women in Hollywood are under tremendous pressure. She had lost a tremendous amount of weight and she dressed totally differently.

Kathy Najimy, who starred with Murphy in the King Of The Hill animated series, speculates that Monjack arrived when Brittany was in poor health, both physically and mentally.

“During a little dive she was taking, he came,” she said. “I think that’s where her judgment was clouded and she fell prey.”

Another topic lists Monjack’s unbelievable lies, including claims that he dated Elle Macpherson and Madonna, and was dying of a brain tumor, although all of them are false.

“Every word in his mouth was a lie,” the man said.

“We were all scared and panicked. Like, who was this guy? Najimy remembers thinking.

Interviewees claim that Monjack and Murphy stayed at their home “24/7” and that “no one approached her” after she was with him.

Some of the subjects interviewed seem to believe that he was involved in her death.

“So who won when he died?” One person thinks.

Others speculate that toxic mold in the couple’s home may have played a role in Murphy’s death, although it is not clear whether the film will seriously pursue that angle or whether it is than a red herring.

“A healthy 32-year-old man doesn’t just die,” adds a woman in the trailer’s last line.

What happened, Brittany Murphy? will be released in two parts on HBO Max starting October 14.
