An investigation is underway.
A stagehand died following a tragic accident while working inside the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway, the New York Police Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 9 a.m. Thursday at 770 Seventh Avenue, the Winter Garden Theater. Inside, a 54-year-old man was found lying on the ground “with injuries consistent with falling from a high height,” police said.
The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead. “A preliminary investigation determined the victim fell from a ladder during routine interview. No crime suspected at this time,” the department said. THR.
The death is currently under investigation. The identity of the deceased is pending notification to the family.
Although Broadway continues to be dark amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, Scott Rudin’s The man of music starring Hugh Jackman was scheduled to begin performances at the Winter Garden Theater on December 20, 2021. The New York Post, who was the first to report the incident, reports that the machinist was clearing the production props of Beetlejuice so preparation for The man of music could start.
