ENGLEWOOD, Colorado – The Broncos have chosen the new leader of their front office.
Denver has agreed to terms with George Paton to become the team’s new general manager, the Broncos announced on Wednesday.
Paton, previously vice president of player personnel / assistant general manager of the Vikings, becomes the 15th personnel superior in Broncos history.
“At the start of this process, it became clear why George was such a coveted GM candidate for so many years,” said football operations president John Elway. “He is a proven evaluator who knows every detail of running football operations. With his experience in all aspects of the job – college and professionals, salary cap, trades, working with the coach – leader and the gathering of staff – George is more than ready to be successful in this role. George has waited and worked for the right opportunity which shows he is smart and serious to win. We are delighted to appoint George Paton to the role general manager of the Denver Broncos. “
Paton has spent 14 seasons in Minnesota, the last nine as the team’s assistant general manager. He assumed his last title of Vice President of Player Personnel / Assistant General Manager in 2018.
“George is one of the most respected and experienced personnel leaders in the NFL,” said Chief Executive Officer Joe Ellis. “He’s a composed and collaborative leader with a clear vision for building a championship team. Knowing George over the past week, his intelligence, work ethic and leadership skills have impressed us all. worked nearly 25 years in the NFL to prepare for this challenge, and we are very fortunate to have George as our new GM. We are delighted to welcome George, his wife Barbara and his children Bella and Beau to the family Broncos. “
During his time with the Vikings, Paton worked closely with general manager Rick Spielman to help build a roster that has made the playoffs in three of the past six seasons and won two division titles since 2015.
“It is an honor to be named general manager of an iconic franchise with a championship tradition like the Denver Broncos,” said Paton. “This organization has great resources, great people, a young core of talented players and an exceptional coaching staff.
“In many ways, I feel like this team is a sleeping giant. For me, this is the right place and the right time for this opportunity.
“Throughout this process, I felt a real connection with Joe, John and Vic. We feel like at home. We share the same values of winning and doing things the right way.
“Although it is difficult to leave the Vikings, the relationships I have had in Minnesota are for life. I am truly grateful to the Wilf family, Rick Spielman, Rob Brzezinski, Mike Zimmer and the entire Vikings organization. Thank you for treating us like family.
“I believe in hard work, hard work and not taking shortcuts to achieve our goals. Drafting and player development is priority 1. We will be aggressive – but not reckless – by adding talent to our list.
“Our family has heard nothing but great things about Colorado, especially passionate Broncos Country fans. With my wife Barbara and kids Bella and Beau, we are proud to now call Denver our home.
“Can’t wait to go to work. Come on Broncos!”
The Vikings made six playoff appearances – with six different starting quarterbacks – and won four division titles in total during Paton’s time in Minneapolis.
