Broncos backups battle for places in Rams game

LOS ANGELES – Preparatory games do not have to boast of being stars, starters and kings to be interesting, in the end. All it takes is that a 29 year old quarterback is retiring at his best. Andrew Luck left football, mentally exhausted by a battery of injuries, admitting, "The joy of this game is removed … the only way forward for me is to retire from football." The Colts are betting on Andrew Chance, forever changing the history of Broncos. Peyton Manning, the Colts' Denver icon, won four division titles, a pair of championships and won the Super Bowl 50 with 18th place.

Be warned, Colts. The Broncos are no longer the same since Manning, at the age of 39, has moved away. Denver is in his fifth starting quarter since Manning, hoping that the fingers crossed will allow Joe Flacco to ensure stability and, if possible, victories. Flacco spent the Saturday warming up, signing autographs and watching the battle of backups.

Counts Kevin Hogan and Jake Butt are among those who have taken advantage of the opportunities offered to them against the Los Angeles Rams, who defeated the Broncos 10-6 at the Los Angeles Sports Coliseum.

With the possibility that Drew Lock can open the season on the injured reserve with a thumb sprain, the Broncos need a safety net under Flacco. Hogan showed improvement on Saturday, pushing for a spot in the lineup given the Broncos' limited space and reluctance, for the moment, to trade for a quarterback after giving up a selection for Flacco.

Hogan "had good plays, some of them worse," said coach Vic Fangio at NBC. In fact, it has improved a lot. He completed 8 of 12 passes for 69 yards and 14 yards at 14 yards. This is an upgrade from its 13 vs 30 in previous games.

Hogan finished with a score of 81.6. Is it enough to avoid a claim or a surrender transaction? This leans in this direction, but nothing is certain for the last 10 places. While Hogan has had plenty of chances, Jake Butt looked helpless this summer.

Returning from this third ACL operation, Butt, who missed two weeks of camping due to knee pain, made his pre-season debut. He brought gasps and intrigues. In his first piece, Butt drew a short square pattern, before limping up to the sideline, favoring his left leg. After talking with the coaches, Butt began to relax and returned to the game. He gave a glimpse of the promise that had made him the tightest player in college football in Michigan. On a training session scored by Hogan, Butt caught two passes for 17 yards.

Although Jeff Heuerman (shoulder) and Noah Fant (ankle) did not play, the Broncos seem better prepared in a tight position. Butt and Fumagalli (five catches) progress.

At the linebacker, it was not the split on Saturday. But there were moments that could resonate when Fangio chose his last uniform. Keishawn Bierria debuted alongside Alexander Johnson and stopped in the third quarter on Johnny Mundt. Johnson and Justin Hollins were tied with seven tackles combined with 12 minutes to play. Hollins becomes a quick two-position study and has a nose for the ball. Is it enough to avoid recruiting a veteran to back Todd Davis, whose availability for the opening of the season is uncertain? It seems so.

As for the special teams that drew Fangio's lure – he threatened to play the starters if it was necessary – the match was mixed. Recipient Juwann Winfree produced the type of stunt needed on the cover of the egrets. He delivered a big challenge in the fourth quarter, bringing his teammates from the sideline to the top. Nobody remains stuck on the return of the balls while the competitions are reflected on the last home game on Thursday. And bettor Colby Wadman continued to fight the inconsistency, combining a 58-yard punt with a 20-yard boot.

Bretty Rypien showed herself promising with two minutes of car at the end of the first half, completing 5 of 7 passes. This led to a goal on the field. However, Rypien was chosen to look for Steven Dunbar Jr. in the middle of the field. The pass has been deflected. Rypien is trying to make the team a third quarter or, more likely, to stay in the team training. … joined the former Broncos offensive lineman, Ryan Clady, on the field before the match. He is happy to retire, lives in Southern California and raises a young child. … Elijah Wilkinson started guarding right with Austin Schlottman in the center. The Broncos keep their options open at the position. Starter Ron Leary has not yet played in the pre-season since he recovers knee injuries and Achilles tendon.
