The Broncos are 2-0 to start the 2021 season, a surprise entry into the season in the AFC West. But their second consecutive victory was not without a price. As the team announced on Tuesday, Pro Bowl backer Bradley Chubb will undergo arthroscopy on his ankle this week to repair a worsened injury in Denver’s win over the Jaguars in Week 2. As a result, the outside linebacker will likely head to the injured reserve, where he will be sidelined for at least three weeks, although NFL Network Reports Chubb could miss six to eight weeks, if not more, while in rehab.
Chubb initially injured his ankle about three weeks ago, before the start of the season, as the Broncos’ Aric DiLalla notes, with the former first-round pick missing from Week 1 as part of a conservative approach to recovery. He left Sunday’s win over Jacksonville at the end of the second quarter, however, after feeling discomfort as he rushed the quarterback. His operation will consist of removing a bone spur.
“I did everything I could to manage it and try to come back and play,” Chubb said, according to the Broncos official website. “I took the week in New York … trying to calm myself down a bit, then this week in Jacksonville I tried to do everything to get back to the field, and unfortunately all of those things weren’t working in my favor. The thing (to do) now is to come in and clean up and be back. “
“Be back,” of course, seems more urgent than Chubb’s expected recovery schedule. In the meantime, the Broncos should rely more on the reserve aside from linebackers Jonathon Cooper, Malik Reed and Andre Mintze against Von Miller.
This isn’t the first time Chubb has been forced to miss an extended period due to injury. In 2019, a year after making his 12-sack debut as a rookie, he suffered a partial ACL tear in Week 4, subsequently missing Denver’s last 12 games.
