The New York Giants have agreed to exchange star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. against the Cleveland Browns, a source confirmed by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Giants will receive the Browns first-round pick in 2019 (17th overall), their third-round pick this year (95th overall) and Jabrill Peppers safety for Beckham, the source said.
Beckham, 26, has signed a five-year megadeal with the Giants worth up to $ 98.5 million less than a year ago. This makes him the NFL's highest paid receiver at the time and seems to cement his place on the Giants' list.
But after another disastrous season when the Giants dropped to 5-11 and Beckham had several incidents that angered the brass of the team, they decided to move it after spending $ 21.5 million for 12 games. The deal also adds $ 16 million of dead money to their cumulative total.
The Giants did not shop in Beckham during the off season. But they were willing to listen to the offers and some teams were interested in his services. They included the San Francisco Browns and 49ers, sources said.
General Manager Dave Gettleman said at his year-end press conference and again at the NFL poll last month: "We did not hire Odell to exchange it, OK?"
That changed on Tuesday, though.
Cleveland, meanwhile, takes another big step towards reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
Beckham will join Jarvis Landry, his former teammate at LSU, arguably the winning tandem in the 1-2 league, which will no doubt delight second-year baker Baker May May. The news of the Beckham agreement, which was first reported by NFL Network, had an immediate impact in Las Vegas. The Browns' chances of winning the Super Bowl went from 25-1 to 14-1 at the Westgate SuperBook Las Vegas. Their chances of winning the AFC went from 12-1 to 7-1, behind the New England Chiefs and Patriots (3-1).
Cleveland was 7-8-1 last season after not winning a match in 2017.
Meanwhile, the Giants' Super Bowl ratings went from 40-1 to 80-1 and NFC's 20-1 to 40-1 by Westgate.
