CLEVELAND, Ohio – There is a price to be paid to being good in the NFL. You have to make tough decisions. These tough decisions sometimes come at the top of the list, but it’s usually the guys you need to keep, the guys who take you from good to great. A dominant edge hunter. A corner stop. A franchise quarterback.
Hard decisions come at a lower level. The Browns face some of those decisions this offseason as they venture into a 2021 season where they will have to fight and win the AFC North and have a real race to the Super Bowl.
A player like Terrance Mitchell, who has been so important to this team as a reliable cornerback, could become a victim if the Browns chase a veteran and use a draft pick on a corner. Or maybe Mitchell is too valuable on the depth map to just let it walk.
BJ Goodson has performed his role admirably this year. Is he back for another contract or are the Browns exploring their options elsewhere?
Even Rashard Higgins, who once again had to prove himself to a front office that waited forever to sign him and a coaching staff who waited weeks to give him meaningful snaps, could have an uncertain future. What’s his long-term role and what are the Browns’ long-term plans for the job? It’s hard to believe he wouldn’t return, but you never know what can happen once the offseason is off.
It’s the task of building a list and managing a cap and figuring out who you absolutely must have, even if it comes at the expense of someone else you really love.
