Browns hire Morgan Burnett to keep Steelers safe

It did not even take a full week of work at the safety of former Pittsburgh Steelers, Morgan Burnett, to find a new home.

The veteran is about to sign a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, reports Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network Insider. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer first announced the news.

Burnett was cut by the Steelers Monday, a year, into a three-year pact. The Steelers attempted to trade security after demanding his release in January, but remained empty.

The Browns, apparently, were waiting behind the scenes.

After being ill at ease in Pittsburgh – who needed more security in depth than a boxer – Burnett hopes to regain his form in Cleveland.

The signing reinforces the tendency of Browns general manager John Dorsey to bring players with whom he is familiar. Dorsey was director of University Scouting in Green Bay when the Packers made Burnett a third-round pick in 2010.

Dorsey continues to hold the security position in Cleveland. After exchanging Jabrill Peppers in New York, he fired young security player Derrick Kindred, traded Eric Murray to Kansas City (another of his former draft picks) and now signs Burnett.

The 30-year-old has barely made it into his 10th season in the NFL, but Burnett's tires still tend to trample, despite the Pittsburgh crisis. It is likely that the Browns have a better plan to use the veteran's skills than the Steelers had done a year ago.

As a potential and potential linebacker, Burnett should also be a complement to free Cleveland Damarious Randall safety in the back. If Burnett is playing as well as at the end of his Green Bay run, the Browns should have a steady back rotation on which to build in 2019.
