Browns shuts down team facility after HC Kevin Stefanski, four other people who test positive for COVID-19

The week isn’t off to a good start for the Cleveland Browns as they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Super Wild Card game on Sunday at Heinz Field as the team announced Tuesday morning that their installation was now closed until further notice due to COVID-19 Testing. Those positive tests include head coach Kevin Stefanski and that means he won’t be able to train against the Steelers on Sunday.

Stefanski, who the team said tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, will now have to go into quarantine and thus miss the Browns playoff game on Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Mike Priefer, Browns Special Teams Coordinator, will act as interim head coach. Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will likely take over from Stefanski.

The Browns also announced Tuesday that two other assistant coaches and two players have also tested positive for COVID-19, but they did not disclose the names of those people. We will surely find out who the players are by the end of Tuesday. Other Browns coaches who have tested positive are reportedly tight ends coach Drew Petzing and defensive back coach Jeff Howard.

The Browns team site is closed today. The Browns-Steelers game is still as expected, according to reports.

UPDATE (12:17 p.m.): The two players who have tested positive are said to be OG Joel Bitonio and WR KhaDarel Hodge. Bitonio served as the team’s starting left guard all season. Hodge caught 11 assists in the regular season.
