An amateur computer historian has unearthed an attractive technological element: the 1989 NeXT catalog. Kevin Savetz recently digitized the entire 138-page book and posted the files on Archive.org.

NeXT is the company that Steve Jobs founded in 1985 after being fired by Apple. The company designed computer workstations and lasted until 1997, when Jobs was reengaged at Apple.

Calling himself an amateur computer historian, Savetz claims to have digitized "tens of thousands of pages of magazines, newsletters and computer catalogs" over the years, as well as co-hosts ANTIC: The Atari 8-bit podcast, conducting hundreds of interviews with the people involved in the business.

Savetz said The edge that the catalog was "part of a lot of old computers I bought at a local recycling / computer recycling company. I had never seen a catalog like this and I did not find many references online. So it was an easy choice to scan. He has since sold the catalog at auction, the proceeds going to RAICES.

Browsing through the catalog, you have a fascinating glimpse of software, the user interface, peripherals, and so on. from NeXT. What is striking about the software is its familiarity with Apple users. According to Savetz, NeXT was a particularly interesting company because "it came at a pivotal moment and, even if it was not a commercial success, its hardware and interface ultimately resulted in Apple's modern products. "Plus, the machines were so cool."
