In the aftermath of the 2019 NFL draft, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman spent days explaining why he took quarterback Daniel Jones with choice number six. At one point in the circular defense, Gettleman explained the selection, saying it was certain that two teams would have stolen Jones before the QB dropped to 17th.
Since this quote came out, the Washington Redskins have been reported as part of those teams that reportedly took Jones. Washington sits at choice # 15.
Appearing on the NFL network Full access On Tuesday night, Redskins' team chairman Bruce Allen told host Lindsay Rhodes that it was all hogwash.
"We chose the player we wanted to choose," Allen said of Dwayne Haskins. "I'm pretty sure Dave has no idea what our editorial board is, I do not know what editorial boards he knows, but he does not know ours."
Preliminary reports indicated that the Redskins had their eyes on Haskins and were considering moving to the project to retrieve it. Allen confirmed to Rhodes that they planned to trade to protect the Ohio state's quarterback, but that they were able to sit well after the Giants took Jones.
"Well, there were still a lot of good football players and they started going there, bang, bang, bang," said Allen, after watching Haskins fall after Big Blue's sixth-round pick. "Come to us, but when that happened, we were excited."
Haskins will compete for the Redskins quarterback position in a veterans room.
"It's a great situation for any quarterback we're going to hire and Dwayne is excited about it," Allen said. "Our most valuable NFL player, Patrick Mahomes, has learned with Alex Smith, and Alex will be part of our program – the doctors still do not know when he will play, or at what time in the match." It will be part of our program and (Haskins) will be able to learn from Case Keenum and Colt McCoy, then our coaching staff will be filled with former quarterbacks and, of course, the great Doug Williams in the building, so it's going to be a excellent learning experience for (Haskins) and we want to make sure that he has a good career. "
Unlike Mahomes, chances are Haskins is not sitting for a year. With Smith's career in danger, he is likely to coach Haskins more as a coach than as a starter, as he did with Mahomes. McCoy has just undergone another operation. Keenum has already defeated the young quarterbacks, but given Haskins' high position in the Redskins organization and the pressure to play the first callers, it would be stunning not to have gotten the job early in the season 2019.
