Bruce Arians has qualified for a 2021 Conference Championship game.
Bill Belichick did not.
Arians, who now has Belichick’s former quarterback on the squad, takes a victory lap. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach took a not-so-veiled shot at his New England Patriots counterpart on Monday, letting the world know he thought he was doing a better job with Tom Brady.
‘I allow him to coach’
The Arians unleashed the grip in an interview with NBC’s Peter King in a discussion praising Brady’s leadership qualities.
“Chef accomplished,” Arians told King. “Has been all year. I have the air of confidence that permeates our team every day.
“I allow him to be himself. Like, New England didn’t allow him to train. I allow him to coach. I just sometimes sit and watch.
So here is. Much has been said about who would win the Brady-Belichick split after the six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback faced New England for Tampa Bay. If you believe in such a tally, then Brady wins by a wide margin, sitting two wins from a seventh championship in a season where Belichick missed the playoffs without him.
Brady doesn’t talk about it. The Arians seem happy to carry the torch with a side of the look-on-me. And more power for him. These deep rides are rare in the NFL – unless you’re Belichick, of course. But the Arians might as well take advantage of it. And if that means one more tweet from his corner, so be it.
Arians also randomly sweep Chase Young
Monday wasn’t even the first random shot of the week fired by the Tampa Bay coach. After his Bucs beat the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s divisional round game, he brushed off the phenomenon of Washington rookie Chase Young.
Speaking about the safety of Bucs rookie Antoine Winfield Jr. after the win, Arians argued that he, not Young, deserved to earn Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He threw a shot at Young’s stat line for good measure.
“Seven and a half bags don’t match what he did,” The Arians said of Young’s sack count.
Maybe Young angered the Arians with his respectful back and forth with Brady around Tampa’s playoff win over Washington. Or maybe the Arians, who are rarely shy, feel it right on the precipice of the NFC Championship game.
