Bruce Springsteen, John Legend and Foo Fighters will perform in the prime-time special that will close the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., and actors Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington will also have roles to play in the program, the inaugural presidential committee said on Friday.
The announcement added even more stars to “Celebrating America,” an event scheduled for the evening of January 20. This week, Mr Biden’s inaugural committee unveiled plans for the show, saying actor Tom Hanks will host while artists like Justin Timberlake, Jon Bon Jovi and Demi Lovato perform.
Officials said the 90-minute event will also include remarks by Mr Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
During the piecemeal rollout of groundbreaking plans, Mr. Biden’s team said the program “will showcase the resilience, heroism and unified commitment of the American people to come together as a nation to heal and rebuild ”. In a press release issued Friday, officials said the program would include “stories from young people making a difference in their communities.” Ms Longoria and Ms Washington, they said, will be presenting these segments, as well as musical performances throughout the night.
The resulting health and safety concerns forced officials to rethink and scale down the inaugural events. For example, they added a “virtual parade across America” and a public art installation on the National Mall. In an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus, there has been no mention of inaugural balls or galas indoors and in person.
