The first line lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” are due for editing 46 years after the song’s release.
The track, which is the first song on The Boss’s legendary 1975 album, “Born To Run,” has come under intense scrutiny over the years when it comes to its first line.
Official versions of the song’s lyrics, including on the original 1975 vinyl pressing and a version on Springsteen’s official website released in 2021, have the song’s first line: “The screen door slams, Mary’s dress ripples.“
Over the past few weeks, however, a debate has started to rage online from those who think Mary’s dress “swings” rather than “waves.”
As part of the investigation, The New Yorker has contacted longtime Springsteen manager and ‘Born To Run’ co-producer Jon Landau to settle the case.
“The word is ‘balance’,” Landau said, adding that “any typos in Bruce’s official material will be corrected.” As Variety Note that the official lyrics for “Thunder Road” on the Springsteen website have since been changed from “waves” to “sways”.
Further discussing the matter, Landau said: “This is the way he wrote it in his original notebooks, this is the way he sang it on ‘Born to Run’, in 1975, c ‘s how he’s always sang it in thousands of shows, and that’s how he sings it on Broadway right now.
Elsewhere, Springsteen recently revealed that he hopes to resume touring next year. While the much-loved musician is currently pursuing his solo Broadway residency at New York’s St. James Theater, he had previously confirmed that he would not be on tour in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball this week (July 14), Springsteen said he now hopes to resume touring in 2022.
“We will be on tour next year if all goes well,” he told Ball. “The E Street Band will be back on the road – you know, depending, of course, on the virus and what’s coming up. “
