SANTA CLARA – There is no doubt that opposing attacks are plotting to reduce Nick Bosa’s effect on the game.
The 49ers passer reports he’s been repeatedly chipped by tight ends, receivers and full-backs hampering his efforts to reach the quarterback. While Bosa has three sacks in Week 3, he didn’t touch the dirt in the 30-28 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Frustration hit the third-year defensive end hard as he tried to get his hands on Aaron Rodgers. On Thursday, Bosa was brutally honest about how he played in the game, especially getting stolen, and how he will adjust in the future.
“I just need to get better with the chips and not just sit around and be shocked that this is happening,” Bosa said. “Expect more and get back to my rush faster. I kind of just sat there and took it against Green Bay and felt sorry for myself. I just have to be ready for it. I just didn’t expect it so much, but it does happen.
Bosa isn’t a hidden secret, and the fact that chipping worked to slow down pass rusher is something all opponents will try to push forward. Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek has handled this over the course of his career and Bosa reports that they will have to use certain stunts to combat the ploy.
“It’s been a lot this year, we have to start doing things to fix this problem,” Bosa said. “Some ‘chip batsmen’ that Kris has used over the years, we just need to get them called up and perform.”
Bosa shared that watching a movie after the loss was not a pleasant task. Kocurek and the rest of the coaching staff called the players to the table. The upside is that they agreed that it was better to have this type of wake-up call early in the season rather than later.
“We had a nice one, I don’t know what to call it,” Bosa said. “We had some interesting meetings that we had to take on and a lot of us didn’t do the job we certainly could have done. Obviously there were a few injuries, but we expect everyone to be able to do the job and a lot of us haven’t.

The challenges on the defensive line won’t be easier as they prepare for their clash with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Containing quarterback Russell Wilson has to be a priority if they are to stand any chance of securing their first win at Levi’s Stadium this season.
Bosa explained that the defensive line watched for Wilson’s cuts, studying the escape routes he took when the pressure came on him. The star passing thrower has yet to save a sack from the Seahawks’ appellant.
“I would love to have it, for sure. Said Bosa.
