Bryan Cranston on the one and only Ivan, Malcom in the middle

To have looked down Godzilla and witnessed a midair plane collision in breaking BadFateful Season Two Finale, Bryan cranston is no stranger to working in front of CGI. But no kaiju could prepare Cranston for The one and only Ivan, which called for an intimately emotional performance in tandem with a (literal) circus of computer-generated animals, including elephants, a pair of dogs, and a talented silverback gorilla. Adapted from the children’s novel awarded the Newbery Medal for Disney +, The one and only Ivan introduces Cranston as Mack, the owner of the Big Top Mall, and the leader of titular ape Ivan and his creature friends who don’t realize that a whole world awaits them outside of captivity. During the virtual phase of the film, we had the opportunity to quiz the actor about all the puppets, green screens, and motion capture artists he worked with to bring the film to life. And, because this year marks the 20th anniversary of the flagship sitcom Malcolm in the middlestarring Cranston as hapless father Hal – the actor also reflected on the show’s legacy and envisioned how the Wilkersons could keep themselves in quarantine.

The one and only Ivan will be available to stream, exclusively on Disney +, starting Friday, August 21.
