Among the many players who count for Red Sox star Mookie Betts, Phillies Phillies player Bryce Harper will want to cash out his winnings when he is free to invest in a year.
Harper, who signed a $ 330 million, 13-year deal with Philadelphia in February, told NBC Sports' John Tomase in Boston that he hoped Betts's eventual deal would overshadow his note.
"Just like Trout," Harper told Tomase. "Mookie is an incredible player. If he has the opportunity to earn more money than me, I hope that he will do it. "
Harper, of course, is referring to the $ 426.5 million deal signed between Trout and the Angels during the winter. Harper and Trout, along with Manny Machado of San Diego, have signed three of the four over 300 million dollar deals in baseball history during the off-season.
Harper spent his first seven seasons of his career with the Nationals, who drafted him with first overall pick in 2010, before leaving for Philadelphia as a free agent. Betts, who has yet to sign overtime with the Red Sox, is set to be out of action next season and may be in a position similar to Harper's.
Harper does not believe that players like Betts should feel obligated to sign lower than market extensions with the teams they have created. Instead, he considers free will as an important process that allows star players to have control over their own career.
"You have the opportunity to go out and listen to other teams and see what they have to offer," Harper told Tomase. "It's a fun time, a good time to feel wanted, and Mookie teams and I think Boston is going to be one of them."
