In a spooky development, the Phillies’ star outfielder Bryce harper left tonight’s game against the Cardinals after being hit in the face by a 97 mph fastball from the St. Louis reliever Genesis Cabrera (via Athletic’s Matt Gelb). Harper was bleeding but left the field on his own and was substituted on goal by Matt Joyce.
It’s obviously far too early to know if Harper will be forced to fail at any time. The 28-year-old is having an incredible start to the season, crushing a .321 / .448 / .615 clip with six homers in his first 96 appearances at home plate. The left-handed batter entered today’s game with a 190 WRC + which placed eighth in qualifying.
Brad Miller and Joyce would apparently be the most likely candidates to take starts in the right field if Harper ends up needing time off. Both have been productive offensive players over the past two seasons and Miller, in particular, has got off to a strong start in the flat this year.
