The UNC basketball program continues to push for a commitment from Bryce Thompson, but the prospect of the 5-star class of 2020 could be headed somewhere else
Roy Williams and the North Carolina basketball program had a busy week and got the commitment of one of the best players on the front court of Walker Kessler's 2020 promotion.
Kessler, who is 7 feet tall and weighs 245 pounds, is joined in the Tar Heels class in 2020 by Day of Ron Sharpe, a long-time top-20 performer. The 5-star pair offers North Carolina the most formidable duo on the court before joining the ranks of colleges next year. They also represent the top two 5 stars to engage in the Tar Heels in the same recruiting cycle since Tyler Zeller and Ed Davis in 2008.
With the future of the North Carolina Front Court well underway, the coaching staff of the UNC is now focusing on the other areas in which the Tar Heels needs. One of the positions the Tar Heels could draw from next year's training lineup is that of guard duty, and one of their current recruiting targets would fill this void perfectly.
This player, Bryce Thompson, is from Tulsa, Okla., And weighs 175 pounds. He is firmly ranked among the top 25 players in the 2020 category. A talented guard with good size and length for his position, Thompson is a good running back with a formidable offensive game. He can score from anywhere on the pitch, organize the break and create his own dribble throw. It is also a good distributor and a constant threat to shoot down from afar.
Thompson plays a tenacious defense on the other side of the field thanks to his nervous frame and his basketball skills – which should allow him to keep several positions at the college level. And given the improvement he has shown over the past season, he does not even seem to have reached his full potential.
Once considered a Thompson recruiting leader and one of the most likely destinations for the 5-star shooter, North Carolina now seems to be out-of-the-box. This idea has recently been confirmed by the recruiting analyst at Rivals, Corey makes it clear that while the Tar Heels are still in play, they no longer seem to be part of the top two or three Thompson schools.
