BTS and Blackpink Make History of K-Pop – Variety

This weekend marks the beginning of the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival, but the party is not the only phenomenon of music in everyone's mind. Korean pop artists post a week of pennants in the US group, with BTS breaking a record on YouTube and performing on "SNL," while Blackpink marks a first with his Coachella performance.

BTS, the best-known K-pop group outside of South Korea, broke YouTube's record for most 24-hour viewings with the debut of the "Boy With Luv" video, starring Halsey. Until 5 o'clock Saturday, "Boy With Luv" had accumulated a little over 78 million views.

The statistic is not surprising – K-pop fans are among the hippest on the market. In fact, BTS recorded the Blackpink record, a group of K-pop girls who had managed the feat a week ago with his video clip for "Kill This Love" with 56.7 million views.

Blackpink is far from new on the scene, the millions of fans of the group – known as "Blinks" – frequently record records for the group, then break with the next version of Blackpink. Blackpink made his American television debut in February in the movie "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert", followed by an appearance in "Good Morning America".

This weekend, the band made their debut at Coachella with a winning performance of the festival on Friday. The weekend progress of the K-pop train is expected to continue, with the BTS debuting as "SNL" – the first time a K-pop band comes to 30 Rockefeller – to promote its latest album, "Map of the Soul: Persona". Although we do not know which song they will play or how seven members will join a choreographed dance routine in a relatively small scene, one thing is certain: this weekend marks a victory for K-pop.
