South Korean pop group BTS took home four top awards, including Best Song for “Dynamite” and Best Group at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday night, while Lady Gaga took home the Best Artist award. BTS also selected the best fans and the best virtual live for Bang Bang Con.
The show honoring the best in world music aired on the channel on Sunday with performances by Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Doja Cat and DaBaby. Girl group Little Mix welcomed.
Gaga, who attended the event with the most nominations, defeated Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd for the best artist award. However, she lost the best video, which went to DJ Khaled for “Popstar”. The collaboration with Drake has beaten the likes of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion for “WAP”.
Cardi B did, however, win the award for best hip hop. Coldplay took home Best Rock, Haley Williams got Best Alternative, and Little Mix was named Best Pop. And the prize for the best Latin went to Karol G, who also won the best collaboration for “Tusa” with Nicki Minaj.
David Guetta, who won the award for best electronics, also performed the show from a stage in Budapest. Singer-songwriter YUNGBLUD took home the award for best push and Doja Cat took home the award for best new artist.
For a third year, the MTV EMAs presented a Generation Change Award, this time to five women who fight for racial and social justice around the world: Kiki Mordi, Temi Mwale, Catherhea Potjanaporn, Luiza Brasil and Raquel Willis.
Eddie Van Halen, who passed away last month, was also remembered in a tribute featuring Tom Morello and St. Vincent.
