After surprising their fans by announcing their intention to collaborate, the BTS rapper j-hope and the American-Mexican pop singer Becky G have given up their new single "Chicken Noodle Soup". The duo announced yesterday their collaboration on Twitter with Becky G "Soooo … #BeckyHasAnotherSecret." The official report of BTS members responded with a sinister tone: "Hey @iambeckyg, I also have a secret. #CNS", revealing a hint of the title of the song.
"Chicken Noodle Soup" is a remake of the 2006 success of American producer DJ Webstar, featuring rappers Young B and Voice of Harlem. The song is gaining popularity by paying homage to Harlem's powerful hip-hop culture and also making waves with its chicken dance associated with the virus. In the j-hope version, the rapper replaces some of the first English to Korean self-writing verses. Becky G adds one of her own Spanish verses, keeping intact the iconic chorus "Let it rain and all the rest" and "Chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side". J-hope's rap is about how her motivation and love of dance have led to success, while Becky G is proud of her Latin American heritage, her femininity and her meteoric rise. The rhythm oscillates between funk, soul and pop, while maintaining a powerful bass-rich hip-hop rhythm. j-hope leaves a final impression on the whole track by adding its signature echoing background alterations (important in many tracks of BTS).
Directed by frequent BTS collaborator, YongSeok Choi, aka Lumpens, the 2019 "Chicken and Noodle Soup" video retains its old style and stays true to the original 2007 video with groups of urban dancers. The dancers alternate between an original choreography and the popular dance "Soup with chicken and noodles" associated with the track in an empty car park. j-hope approaches the match smoothly with confident moves, before being joined by Becky G who drives him in a bright red car. In one shot, the two perform their respective verses in turn before joining their dancers to discover the chorus and group choreography of the song. The clip finally makes a smooth transition to the night on the same parking lot and the dancers display their individual moves before j-hope finishes the video with a free cutting style solo.
The rapper then continued broadcasting the video by dropping a clip of him doing the "Chicken Noodle Soup" dance on the newly released BTS TikTok profile, and urging fans to do the same, dubbed the #CNSChallenge .

The entire track and video are a multicultural celebration of dance and hip-hop, and j-hope is absolutely in its element, thriving through the energy of the threatening but funky beat. This is an excellent example of the overall evolution of hip-hop and the power of music to bring cultures together and create new spaces for people of color. "Chicken Noodle Soup" marks the first outing of a BTS member after an interruption of one month, and the group would return together later this year.
