Buccaneers’ AQ Shipley could have career-ending injury

Tampa Bay center AQ Shipley likely suffered a career-ending neck injury on Monday night, Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said Wednesday night.

The Arians first said Shipley suffered a stinger and said he “appeared to be doing well” after the eight-year NFL veteran was injured following the 27-24 loss to the Rams from Los Angeles.

The Arians gave a more dire assessment Wednesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“AQ Shipley appears to have suffered a career-ending injury,” he said. “And I feel bad because I love AQ. He’s one of my favorite players of all time and he was playing well for us. But I think it was a previous injury that could have worsened to the neck.

Shipley, 34, is in his first season with the Buccaneers but previously played under Arians with the Arizona Cardinals from 2015-17.

Shipley started the last two games at center after Ryan Jensen was moved to left guard to replace injured Ali Marpet (concussion protocol). He played all 80 offensive shots in the Week 10 win at Carolina and missed just two of 69 shots against the Rams.

Originally a seventh-round pick in 2009 by the Penn State Pittsburgh Steelers, Shipley played 110 games (72 starts) with the Indianapolis Colts (2012, 2014), Baltimore Ravens (2013), Cardinals and the Buccaneers.

Jensen will likely be back in center when Tampa Bay (7-4) hosts the Kansas City Chiefs (9-1) on Sunday.
