The Vikings in 2018 set a record that would be hard to beat. The Buccaneers in 2020 have found a way to break it.
With just five rushed attempts in Sunday night’s resounding loss to the Saints, Tampa Bay established a new low water line for single-game races.
In September 2018, the Vikings ran the ball just six times in a stunning 27-6 home loss to the Bills.
The Buccaneers’ first inning on Sunday night came on the second game of their first practice, a seven-yard gain by Ronald Jones. The official second inning (a previous inning was canceled by a waiting penalty) occurred on the first play of the third practice, with Jones gaining two yards after a breakaway catch near the Tampa Bay goal line.
The Bucs had no runs on their next two drives, the second of which ended in an interception.
The next player, with eight games, had a third inning – no gain from Leonard Fournette at the second and third points.
On the first drive of the second half, Ronald Jones got nowhere on the second and one goal.
The fifth and final rush attempt, technically, came when quarterback Blaine Gabbert took a knee to end the game.
The final count? Five rushed attempts, eight meters. 1.6 on average. And a one-dimensional offense that just isn’t sustainable.
