The Buckeyes still have some work to do in this current recruiting cycle, but they are definitely making their presence known in next year’s class.
Ohio State already has the No.1 class in 2022 and just added one of the country’s top prospects to the fold today. Caleb Burton, the No. 29 junior overall from Rivals, announced his commitment to Ryan Day and his team moments ago, with the move coming four days after the five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers joined the Buckeyes.
This is incredible news for a program that already holds the promises of four of the top 25 players in the country: CJ Hicks, Dasan McCullough, Gabe Powers and Ewers. Not to mention that they continue to establish a stronghold in Ohio with Jyaire brown and Tegra Tshabola in the crease, and have tight top-15 ends Bennett Christian and Benji gosnell engaged.
At Burton, the state of Ohio maintains its tendency to land coveted large receivers from the Lone Star State. They signed Jaxon Smith-Njigba in 2020 and limited five-star rookie Garrett wilson the year before. If Burton’s current ranking maintains or improves, he will eventually earn five-star status on our ranking service.
It should also be noted that this commitment is quite significant given Luther Burden’s decision to team up with the Oklahoma Sooners last month. I listed Burton, with Armani Winfield, CJ Williams and Darrius Clemons, as large receivers to pay attention to Burden’s engagement. We’ll be paying attention to the other pass catchers listed above, as well as Arizona’s promise Kiyon Graves, for the remainder of this cycle.
Andy Anders will soon have a full rundown of Burton’s skills and what that means for the state of Ohio. I wanted to include this quote from Burton from June, though, which might give some insight into his decision to commit to the Buckeyes.
“Even as a child, I grew up watching and knowing the state of Ohio,” Burton told Sam Spiegelman. “Coach (Brian) Hartline, what he does with wide receivers is really great. He’s played in the league so I like talking to the coach because he’s been through it all. excited when Ohio State volunteered because I was looking forward to that one for a while.
“I’m learning a lot and Coach Hartline told me he was going to train us hard, but it’s for the best. He knows everything it takes to help you get to where you want to be. . “
The state of Ohio could also receive more good news in the future, as it is possible that several high profile targets will join Burton to commit to the program before the end of the year.
