A few Super Bowl LVI contenders find themselves winless after Week 1, but only two teams qualify as “fraudulent” before Week 2.
According to ESPN analyst Bart Scott, the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans should both be considered Super Bowl frauds based on their respective performances last Sunday.
Buffalo fell to 0-1 after losing 23-16 to the Pittsburgh Steelers while the Titans were beaten at home, 38-13, to the Arizona Cardinals.
During an appearance on First Take, Scott said he was concerned about both teams.
“I’m concerned with both, isn’t it?” Scott said. “Because I think right now they’re a bit of a fraud. Look, these two teams and organizations were sold to us as Super Bowl contenders. As people who could possibly knock the Kansas City Chiefs off the top of the mountain. And then when I look at what is happening and I look at what has happened … “
What happened in the first week was that the Pittsburgh defensive front moved past the Bills’ offensive line and made life miserable for Josh Allen for four quarters. This led to a performance in which the Buffalo franchise quarterback made 30 of 51 (58.8%) attempts for 270 yards and one score while rushing for 44 yards. According to Scott, Allen’s performance against the Steelers was one in which the quarterback showed some of his old ways from his first two years in the league.
“All the old bad habits are starting to reappear for Josh Allen,” Scott said. “Josh Allen had 21 failures… Pittsburgh, I thought I pushed them defensively and dictated the game.”
Week 1 was not Allen’s best performance by any stretch of the imagination, but the quarterback still delivered over 300 yards of total attacking against a Steelers defense that could end up in the top. 3 in the league.
Scott would go on to express he’s more concerned about the Titans, but that clearly seems to be an overreaction from the former NFL linebacker. Scott made no mention of the Green Bay Packers, one of the favorites to represent the NFC at the Super Bowl, having blown up against the New Orleans Saints or the Baltimore Ravens against the Las Vegas Raiders. Whether it’s a one-point loss to a resounding loss, the NFL season is long and losses like this happen every year.
There’s plenty of room for improvement for the Bills after Week 1, but the sky isn’t falling despite Scott’s comments.
