Anthony Head responded to allegations of toxic behavior made against Buffy the Vampire Slayer boss Joss Whedon.
This week, Charisma Carpenter and Amber Benson both alleged that Whedon – who faces similar charges of Justice League actors – created a hostile working environment on the series.
Talk to This morning Presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield from his home in Bath today (February 11), Head, who played Giles on the show for six years, revealed he had no idea of the allegations at the time and felt “drained” learning about them now.

“I spent most of the night going through my memories thinking, ‘What did I miss?’,” He said. “Because, and it’s not a man who says, ‘I didn’t see it, so it didn’t happen.’
“I’m emptied, seriously emptied, because one of my memories, my dearest memory [from Buffy] is the fact that he was so empowering. Not just in the words of the script, but in the family vibe of the series. “
Head continued, “I’m really sad that if people were going through these experiences – I was kind of like a father figure – I would hope someone would come up to me and say, ‘I’m fighting, I just have had a conversation ‘.
“Certainly Charisma’s first message was when she was working on angel, and I was long gone. But there are other posts after that that make me think, “How the hell did I not know this was happening?” “

Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy, wrote that she came forward after Justice League Actor Ray Fisher’s misconduct charges against Whedon over the Justice League together, writing: “For nearly two decades I held my tongue and even found excuses for certain events that still traumatize me today.”
Among the allegations Carpenter made in her open letter, Whedon ridiculed her about her pregnancy weight and once questioned her in a private meeting about whether she would terminate the pregnancy.
Carpenter’s co-star Michelle Trachtenberg also wrote on Instagram that Whedon showed “inappropriate behavior” with her, while Amber Benson, who played Tara, also alleged a toxic environment in the show, writing: ” @AllCharisma is telling the truth and I support it 100%. There has been a lot of damage during this time and many of us are still dealing with it twenty years later. “
Buffy Star Sarah Michelle Gellar added that although she is “proud to have [her] name associated with Buffy Summers “, she does not” want to be associated with Joss Whedon forever “.
“I stand alongside all survivors of abuse and I am proud of them for speaking out,” she added.
