The Between Gardens is a puzzle that distorts time in the name of friendship. This is the latest game from Australian independent studio The Voxel Agents, and in addition to launching on PC and PlayStation 4, it will arrive on Nintendo Switch. It is scheduled for Q3 release later this year.
Last month, I tried The Between Gardens in Brazil's Independent Games Festival, where the game was in place for the Best Art Award of the event. He has a dreamy aesthetic, his surrealistic landscapes soaked in soft colors, and a suitable and eccentric mechanic. Rather than moving the main characters Arina and Frendt in the usual way, you advance and rewind the time instead and watch as they follow a predetermined path. Many puzzles play with loose causality, forcing you to go ahead in time to make a change, then go back to the past to let things be played in new ways.
The Gardens Between is the new game of Voxel agents. Although his previous titles were quite different in style, they were also jigsaw puzzles – like the Train Conductor Track and Train Conductor 2 United States as well as the Puzzle Retreat minimalism.
Each level of The Gardens Between demo appeared as the island, dotted with familiar objects and representing moments of friendship between Arina and Frendt. These elements are often scaled, appearing larger than life – like a huge comic TV or a huge moving truck – and showing the importance of these little snippets for the main characters.
Simon Joslin, co-founder of Voxel Agents, tells The Winds Through the Game are based on the team's childhood friendships, who felt "so incredibly tall that the links could never to be broken. "
