Cuba's New Constitution to be Debated and Voted by Parliament in Havana at the End of this Week

Cuba will resolve the right to private property and the functioning of the free market. This is part of the draft of a new Constitution of the Island of Liberty, extracts of which are reported by the local government office in Granma.

Currently, only public, cooperative, agricultural, personal and collective properties are recognized in the country.

The new amended fundamental law will be discussed in the Havana Parliament at the end of this week and a vote is expected. If approved by MPs, the constitution will be submitted to a national referendum later this year.

One of the innovations in the constitution is the position of a president who will be entitled to two five-year terms. A prime minister is also elected to share political power with the president. Until now, the head of state has been chairman of the state council and the ministerial council, the prime minister and the president and his stay in power are not limited

However, the new constitution retains the main role of the Communist Party as well as the planning of the state as the key principle of the economy
