IFA has been a mixed bag over the past two years, with most of the big smartphone announcements occurring elsewhere. That said, IFA is where we see tablets, props (smartwatches, in particular) and more technology-based ads, and it's in this vein that we have news from Huawei [19659002]. but it is widely expected that Huawei will announce its new processor – the Kirin 980 – this year at the event.
What do we know about Huawei's next chip? In short, not too much. It has been reported that the Kirin 980 will feature 7nm processing technology, with four big A77 cores and four small A55 cores (a fairly standard ARM processor scheme). This will allow the Kirin 980 to reach 2.8 GHz.
The inclusion of a neural processing unit is not new, either – the AI on board is a big thing these days. The Kirin 980 will include a 1M Cabricon chip, developed earlier this year. Designed specifically for the processing of visual language, speech and natural language, these chips can – at the top of the scale – perform something in the order of 8 operations Trillion by watt of energy, and that is hugely.
