Jakarta. At least three people died Sunday after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake (EMSC) in the Indonesian island of Lombok, officials said, transmitting AFP
The mighty earthquake, whose epicenter sits at a depth of seven kilometers (4 miles), struck at 6:47 am local time (1:47 GMT), the US Geological Survey reported.
Lombok in the southeastern part of Indonesia is a popular tourist destination and is located about 100 km east of the island resort of Bali.
The epicenter is located 50 kilometers northeast of the main town of Mataram, in Lombok, reported the USGS, far from the main tourist sights south of the western part of the island
.
"A man died in East Lombok and two died in northern Lombok," said a spokesman for the Indonesian disaster relief agency, Sutapho First Nugroho.
No details were provided on how the victims were killed
At least 20 people were injured in the earthquake and one home was badly damaged in North Lombok. No tsunami alarm was reported
After the first earthquake, three more earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5 were recorded on the Richter scale.
