For the 10th anniversary of the App Store, we choose our best mobile games of the last decade

It's been 10 years since Apple launched the App Store on July 10, 2008, a day before the release of the iPhone 3G.

During the day, there were only 500 apps available for download. This might not look like much until 2018, but the launch has become a defining moment in the evolution of smartphones, tablets and other smart devices.

Now, the App Store has more than 2.2 million applications and numbers. From games, entertainment, travel and sports to finance, education, fitness and health, 20 million Apple developers worldwide have raised US $ 100 billion to date.

Apple is not content and enjoy success, either. The launch of ARKit in 2017 has proved that the technology giant intends to continuously develop the App Store, and just have a look at some of the applications of breathtaking augmented reality to see it first-hand. There are already 3,000 AR apps available on the App Store, but do not be surprised to see this number climb in the near future as AR becomes a staple of everyday life.

Since the App Store is celebrating its 10th anniversary, we went on a journey in memory and compiled a list of the most iconic titles in its most popular category: games.

Ninja Fruit

How could one start with anything other than the clbadic Australian application, Fruit Ninja ? First released by Halfbrick in April 2010, the game has become an instant hit and remains one of the most downloaded mobile games of all time. We are not surprised, either – who does not appreciate the therapeutic splat * when slicing and cutting colorful and juicy fruits?

Words With Friends

While a number of word games hit the App Store shortly after its inception, none of them popularized the genre as Newtoy's Words With Friends . Although the game is, for the most part, a brilliant remake of Scrabble, the game has hit the right place and has been a hit in the App Store ever since. If you still do not have the pleasure of playing, please take note: for a game with "Friends & # 39; in the title, he certainly has a talent for launching bitter arguments.

Flappy Bird

If you owned an iPhone or iPad between 2012 and 2014, you will know the spectacular success and removal subsequent to Flappy Bird too well. Developed by video game artist Dong Nguyen in a few days, the side-scrolling game exploded in popularity and became the best free game on the App Store in 2014 – only for Nguyen to remove the game a months later because of guilt over its addictive nature. If you want to play in 2018, your options are to settle for a copycat title or spend a fortune on an old smartphone with the game preinstalled.

The rise of Pokémon Go looks like nothing the world has ever seen. Launched by Niantic in 2016, the AR application has captured the imagination of the world in a few weeks and has recorded more than half a billion downloads by the end of the year, generating $ 500 million revenue faster than any other historical game. Although the popularity of Pokémon Go has decreased as fast as it has increased, Niantic is still looking to improve the game to maintain its loyal player base
