Instagram is apparently working on a new authentication method. Work on non-SMS based two-factor authentication that will work with security applications like Google Authenticator and more, to prevent theft or hacking based on the SIM card.

According to a TechCrunch report, a prototype version of the two-factor feature update was found in the Android version of APK's APK, which was discovered by tipster Jane Manchun Wong. "We continue to improve the security of Instagram accounts, including strengthening two-factor authentication," the company said in a statement to TechCrunch. With this feature, apps like Google Authenticator generate a new token for a limited time and users can simply use the user name and pbadword with the token to securely log in to their accounts.

The spokesman for Instagram has confirmed to The Verge that the company is currently testing this feature on its application. However, the company refused to provide any other information regarding the same thing. Instagram notes that users will not be notified when they are removed from the list of followers.
