New prototype of Volkswagen T-Cross

Volkswagen T-Cross will be the company's third new SUV in 18 months when it launches next spring, completing a family lineup of five off-road vehicles.

We were at the wheel of the new Volkswagen mini-SUV in a pre-production form finalized, before the official debut of the car in October.

The rival SEAT Arona front-wheel drive is a little longer than a Polo with 4.107mm. It is also 110mm higher, and the driving position has also been increased by 100mm. As a result, it is considerably larger than a Polo in all directions, despite the identical wheelbase.

At the rear, the T-Cross features a bench that slides back and forth, increasing the space for the legs by 150 mm. This means that the space for luggage can range between 385 and 455 liters, which makes it much more convenient than a polo shirt. That said, by sliding the backseat forward, a curiously wide hole runs through the back of the boot, into which fairly large objects can fall. There will initially be three engine choices: two three-cylinder 1.0 liter gasoline and one diesel. The first TSI engine gets 94 hp and 160 Nm of torque, linked to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The second gasoline engine makes 113bhp / 200Nm and a six-speed transmission, while the 1.6 TDI has 94bhp and 250Nm, plus a six-speed gearbox. These could also be joined by a DSG TSI of 1.5 liter of 148 hp in time.

There will be four trim levels: S, SE, SE L and R-Line. VW has not yet set prices in the UK, but the entry-level S with the least powerful gasoline engine will start at around £ 17,000. This is a £ 3000 premium compared to the cheapest polo.

We drove the 113 hp petrol version which should be the biggest seller. Get on board and the first thing you'll notice is the top driving position and the new dashboard design T-Roc . The dashboard's plastics are harder than in a Polo, but the eight-inch touch-screen infotainment system looks superb.

It feels more mature inside, and the extra space is immediately visible from one of the five seats, but back. With the bench in its most remote position, it is really spacious in the back, with legs and a roof guard.

The performance of the turbocharged engine is decent rather than sparkling, but refined is still impressive. However, there was a little more wind noise than we imagined around the A pillars of these pre-production cars

On the move, the T-Cross rolls extremely well and moves with light precision and precise. It does not roll as much as you think for a car so big, and again its chbadis has an adult sophistication that belies the price of the small SUV. The T-Cross seems to drive more than enough for a car in this clbad, so even if it's never going to excite an enthusiast.

When the VW scores the most strongly compared to its competition is on the cabin feel, although the good practicality and high-end options should help it stand out more from the crowd.
