Nissan abandons a common model with Mercedes

The auto production plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Nissan has withdrawn from the project to co-develop a compact luxury model with Mercedes, reported Nikkan Kogyo. The Japanese company, however, stressed that they wanted to keep their other partnerships with the German giant

Both companies worked on a luxury model that will be manufactured in their joint venture in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and sold primarily to North American markets. Compact models have fueled the United States much after the crisis and rising fuel prices at the end of the last decade. Now, however, interest in them is steadily declining as Americans return to traditional vans and large SUVs. This is one of the reasons for Nissan's withdrawal from the project. The second is the uncertainty surrounding Mexican industries, alongside Donald Trump's plans for drastic increase in import duties for imported cars.

The Aguascalientes factory was built by Nissan and Daimler in 2017 and has a capacity of 230,000 cars a year. For now, only the Infiniti QX50, the crossing of the luxury brand Nissan, will be realized

. The spokesman for Infiniti however emphasizes that the partnership with Daimler remains "solid" and "successful".

The union between Renault-Nissan and the Germans last decades forged by Carlos Gon and Dieter Cetche. The two giants have even traded shares to secure it – Nissan and Renault now hold 1.55% of Daimler and the Germans 3.1% of Nissan.

Companies exchange technologies and sometimes even models as is the case of the Mercedes X-clbad, built on the basis of Nissan Navara. They also have a common engine plant in the US state of Tennessey
