Magnus Carlsen kept the world chess crown. The 27-year-old Norwegian secured his third straight win in defense of the title after winning a draw against American contender Fabiano Carouana.
Karlsen defended his favorite role in accelerated chess and won the decisive game 3-0 after not failing to break his rival. The two men enter the history of the games for the world title by recording 12 shots in the 12 clbadic games.
The Tybeck has predicted up to four parts of accelerated chess with a 25-minute control plus 10 seconds per shot. The first three sufficed for Karlsen to end the meeting to his advantage.
The Norwegian played with the white figures in the first match and forced Carouana to go to the 55th round. In the second round, the world champion won the victory only after 28 shots.
After taking a solid lead, Karlsen needed a draw in the third part to triumph.
On the 30th stroke, it was clear that Carouana had no chance of returning to the match. The 27-year-old continued to fight, but finally shook hands with his opponent after the 51st move.
For the second time in a row, Carlsen won the world title after a tie. In 2016, the Norwegian beat Russian Sergei Karyakin after a draw in the first two games of accelerated failures and victories in third and fourth place.
Karlsen reached the world summit in 2013 by defeating Vishwanathan Anand with a score of 6.5: 3.5 points.
A year later, they were both in a battle for the chess crown and the Norwegian won again the winner (6.5: 4.5 points).
